My Favorite Reads (8/17)
Interesting reads from around the interwebs:
Bidding to host Olympics is a terrible dream for Kenya – Waga Odongo looks at why Kenya shouldn’t look at hosting the Olypmics as the ultimate dream, following the Prime Minister’s promise that Kenya would bid to host the 2024 Olympics. While on the surface it may seem that hosting such an event is good for the country’s economy, Waga asserts that it has in the past left the host countries worse off. It is an interesting read, and I agree with him. There are far better things we should be aspiring toward as a country.
Meet the tweeters – Social media marketing is huge, and every company is now looking for ways to engage with their clientele on Twitter and Facebook. This article looks at some of the most successful corporate Twitter accounts, the faces behind them, and their perception of the products they market.
Inc.com – shares 12 tips for balancing entrepreneurship and parenthood, as shared by 12 successful and young entrepreneurs. I found it most instructive and useful, especially as a new mom. I’m learning to compartmentalize (leave work stress at work and vice versa), focusing on the task at hand, and to hire right both at home and at work.
What most succesful people do before breakfast – Laura Vanderkam, author of the eBook summarises the book in this article. I won’t say much about the book now, it’s on my to-read list next. Whether you are a morning person or not, mornings are scientifically proven to be the best for accomplishing things that require brain power, since you’re fresh and rested. Use them wisely.
Torture or training – China was incredible at the Olympics, coming second to the US in medal count. How do they do it? This article goes into their torture training camps. As much as the country’s performance impressed me, this article left me feeling troubled, and very grateful for democratic Kenya, despite our unimpressive performance.
